Gertrude Maartense was born in the Netherlands in 1918. She was active as an artist through the 1960s to the 1980s. Her styles included meticulous watercolours and complex geometric cubism. She lived in North Battleford, Saskatchewan in the 1960s before moving to Winnipeg. Her work is held in the permanent collections of the Winnipeg Art Gallery, the Art Gallery of Guelph, and the University of Winnipeg Art Collection.
