Saskatchewan NAC Auction House Biography and Notes
SKNAC bio: George Weber was born in 1907 in Munich, Germany. He trained as a draughtsman and designer, and in the late 1920's emigrated to Canada. After settling in Toronto, Ontario, Weber worked as a wallpaper designer while he studied at the Ontario College of Art, with an emphasis on printmaking including commercial printing. In the mid-1930s Weber moved to Edmonton, Alberta, and started his own commercial sign company. He also took classes at the University of Alberta (Edmonton) and the Banff School of Fine Arts. Eventually Weber developed the specialization in serigraph printmaking for which he is renowned, and lectured on the silkscreen process at the University of Alberta and led silkscreen workshops, influencing a generation of Alberta artists. Webers work has been exhibited widely across Canada, including solo exhibitions at the Edmonton Art Gallery (now the Art Gallery of Alberta) and can be found in the permanent collections of the National Gallery of Canada (Ottawa), Alberta Foundation for the Arts, Glenbow Museum (Calgary), Art Gallery of Alberta (Edmonton), and the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies (Banff). George Weber died in 2002 in Edmonton, Alberta.
