Fred Schaefer was born in Amsterdam, Netherlands, in 1921. He studied scenic and theatrical design and interior architecture at the Dutch Royal Academy of Art. Upon coming to Canada, Schaefer initially worked in Montreal and Toronto before settling in Vancouver, British Columbia. He was a longtime member of the Federation of Canadian Artists, serving as its president in the early 1990s, and was an art instructor and lecturer. In 1991 he was commissioned to create a painting of Vancouver's harbourfront to be presented to Princess Margriet of the Netherlands during her visit to Canada. Fred Schaefer died in 2001 in Vancouver.
