Saskatchewan NAC Auction House Biography and Notes

Francisco Goya was born in 1746 in Fuendetodos, Spain. He was a world-respected artist who worked in a bold style and whose etchings and paintings often included political statements and subversive elements. Goya was a court painter to the Spanish Crown and was Director of Painting at the Royal Academy of San Fernando. He remained in Madrid during the invasion by Napoleon, and his later works are very dark and political. Disillusioned by political and social changes in Spain, he eventually retired to Bordeaux, France, where he died in 1828.
