Francesco Bartolozzi was born in Florence, Italy in 1727. As a young man he apprenticed in painting, but then went to Venice to study engraving and spent six years works for Joseph Wagner before setting up his own shop. He was offered the position of Engraver to the King of England, and moved to London in 1764. There he produced an enormous number of engravings, became a leading innovator of the stipple method of engraving, and taught many important British artists. After nearly forty years in England, Bartolozzi accepted the post of director of the National Academy of Lisbon, Francesco Bartolozzi died in Lisbon in 1815.
