Fernando Llort was born in 1949 in San Salvador, El Salvador. As a youth he studied ceramics with master Cesar Sermeno, and then studied architecture at University of El Salvador. After a brief time studying religion in a seminary in Medillin, Columbia, Llort attended the University of Toulouse, in France, and earned a Bachelor of Philosophy degree. During this time in France he also worked on art, and held his first exhibitions. Llort then studied at at Louisiana State University (Baton Rouge) before returning to El Salvador in 1971. Based in La Palma for much of the 1970s Llort's work is part of the Estilo Palmeno, a sort of Naive art focused on narrative, religious and indigenous symbols and bright colours. Fernando Llort died in 2018 in La Palma, El Salvador. He has been dubbed "El Savladore's National Artist".
