Ettore Sottsass

Ettore Sottsass is one of the most influential designers of the twentieth century, whose work redefined the boundaries of industrial design and ceramics. Born in Innsbruck in 1917, Sottsass began his studies at the Milan School of Design after training in architecture at the Polytechnic University of Turin, and then opened his own design agency in 1947. His first collaboration was in 1956 with the Poltrona firm, where he became the artistic director for 10 years. During this decade, Sottsass developed his own style, creating simple, geometric designs with graphic patterns and primary colours. However, Sottsass is best known for his role in the creation of the Memphis Group, a collective founded between 1980 and 1981 that brought together young international designers. This collective, which enjoyed immediate success, revolutionized design with its bold forms, breaking away from the conventions of modern design of the time. The Memphis Group promoted a freer, more expressive approach, having a significant impact on design and architecture. In addition to founding the Memphis Group, Sottsass is also recognized in the world of ceramics, particularly for his collaboration with the prestigious Italian glass manufacturer Venini. This remarkable collaboration began in 1947, with Sottsass bringing his bold vision and unique sense of colour and form to the tradition of blown glass. Exploring new techniques and forms, Sottsass consistently respected Venini’s legacy of craftsmanship and quality. His works for Venini are distinguished by their geometric shapes, vibrant colours and glossy textures. Pieces such as the "Marito E Mogli" or "Yemen" vases perfectly illustrate the fusion of Sottsass’s innovation with Venini’s artisanal excellence.
