Ellen Neel was born in 1916 in Alert Bay, Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Neel's parents were both mixed race and she was a member of the Kwakwakawakw people. She learned carving from her grandfather and uncle. After a stroke left her husband unable to earn a living, Ellen Neel worked on her carvings full time, creating totems which small enough for households as well as full size totems many meters high for outdoor public display. Her work can be found in many public collections including University of British Columbia (Vancouver) and Stanley Park (Vancouver). Ellen Neel died in 1966 in Vancouver.
