Elizabeth Knowles studied with F. M. Knowles who she married in 1890, and the two travelled to Europe. In 1908, Knowles was elected as an Associate of the Royal Canadian Academy and by 1912 she was a well-known artist in Canada. In 1919, she was elected member of the National Association of Women Painters and Sculptors, New York and, by 1920, she was living in New York City; both she and her husband continued to show their work in Canada. She was also a member of the Pennsylvania Society of Miniature Painters, the Brooklyn Society of Miniature Painters, the Washington Water color Club, the American Water Color Society, and the League of American Pen Women. Knowles was known as a landscape painter of the romantic school, favouring particularly rural scenes, especially of chickens. Her work "Nocturne" is owned by the National Gallery of Canada and she is also represented at the Agnes Etherington Gallery, Queens University, Kingston, Ontario.
