Doreen Helmer was born in Baring, Saskatchewan, and attended high school and Teacher's College in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. Further studies in educations and art were undertaken at the University of Saskatchewan (Saskatoon) and Queen's University (Kingston, ON). She studied art with Gus Kenderdine, Paul Fudge and Art McKay. Helmer was a member of the Regina Federation of Artists, and her work has been exhibited at the Art Gallery of Regina, McKenzie Art Gallery (Regina) and Dunlop Art Gallery (Regina). Doreen Helmer died in 2005, in Regina, Saskatchewan.
