Cole Bowman was born in 1925 in the Muskoka area of Ontario, and raised in the Mennonite community of Elmira, Ontario. Although he started painting at an early age, he only turned to artmaking full-time after completing a career as a high school teacher and teaching art at the University of Waterloo. Bowman generally worked in oil painting, often depicting landscapes of Waterloo County and Norther Ontario. Cole Bowman died in 2003 in Elmira, Ontario.
