Spanish painter Claudio Castelucho was an important figure in the development of Canadian artists who lived abroad. He was an instructor at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière where he taught Edwin Holgate, John Young Johnstone and likely William Clapp. When Mary Riter Hamilton lived in Paris beginning in 1904, she studied with Castelucho. This painting was perhaps given as a birthday gift to Hamilton upon her return to Vancouver from Paris in 1919, where it was likely exhibited alongside Hamilton's own work at the Navy League Institute in Vancouver.
