Cowley Abbott Auction House Biography and Notes

Born in Montreal, Quebec in l942, Claude Gauthier graduated from Ecole-des-beaux-arts in Montreal. A 30 year award-winning career as a designer in the graphic arts department of Radio-Canada honed his skills in animated film, illustration, and graphic concepts. During this period exhibitions and freelance illustrations complemented his professional career. Drawing inspiration from primitivism, graffiti, and bare humour, his recent works, boldly coloured acrylics on canvas (and the occasional sculpture), explore his personal, idyllic realm incorporating themes of stylized animals, vases, people, and single houses - all creations of the imagination. These impulsive, colourful paintings with strong graphic elements coexisting on layered background textures, convey to the viewer an all-over mood of joyfulness and optimism. He resides and paints in the log house he built in the Laurentian mountains in Val-David, Quebec.
