Waddington's Auction House Biography and Notes

Montreal-based Chris Kline's paintings reference 1960s abstraction and minimalism in their spare visual language. Kline approaches his painting as Colour Field artists did, applying pigment using methods that draw out surprising yet subtle chromatic variations across his paintings' flat surfaces. But, as important is how Kline makes the paintings' support materials integral to the work. This includes the poplin employed in "Course,Á which draws viewers' eyes behind the painted surface and amplifies the work's translucence. Such attention to his paintings' underlying construction situates Kline's practice at the intersection of painting and sculpture, and imbues his work with intriguing three-dimensional qualities.
