Heffel Auction House Biography and Notes
A notable proportion of the work of artist and scholar Barker Fairley are portraits, and their stark, modernist tone provide an important counterpoint to his distinctively minimal stylized landscapes. The subject of this striking portrait is multi-disciplinary artist Pauline Fediow (1908-1980). Inspired as a child by the drawings of William Blake, she studied art and design at the Ontario College of Art, winning the Governor General’s medal in 1932. She went on to study sculpture with German-Canadian sculptor and coin designer Emanuel Otto Hahn (1881-1957), producing sculptures of other artists and performers of her time, including Fairley himself. Fairley did the same, capturing the likeness of fellow artists such as sculptor Almuth Lütkenhaus (1930-1996) and textile artist Ellen Adams (1941-2001), providing an intimate and invaluable record of the artistic milieu of this era.
