Barbara Morgan was born in 1900 in Buffalo, Kansas. He studied at the University of California Los Angeles from 1919 to 1923, where he drawings, prints and paintings skewed toward the abstract. In the late 1930s Morgan began to work almost exclusively in photography, experimenting with light drawing and photomontage, but also developing an intimacy in her documentation of modern dance in America, the work for which she is perhaps best known. She was a founder of Aperture Magazine in 1952, and her work was published and exhibited widely. Today her work can be found in many collects, including Museum of Contemporary Photography (Chicago), University of California, Temple University (Philadelphia), Getty Museum (Los Angeles), Museum of Modern Art (New York) and the Portland Museum of Art. Barbara Morgan died in 1992, in North Tarrytown, New York.
