Notable Art Works
Angelique Merasty Levac is a Metis artist who was born in Northern Manitoba, and raised with traditional Cree teachings. In 1980 Levac began training in birch bark biting after learning about Saskatchewan birch bark artist Angelique Merasty, the most renowned of a very small number of artists who were practicing the tradition at that time. Although not related, the elder artist agreed to mentor Levac, and Levac often visited Merasty at her residence in Beaver Lake, Saskatchewan. Levac is now considered a mentor to the next generation of birch bark biters, and her work has been widely exhibited and collected. It can be found in several permanent collections, including the Minneapolis Institute of Art and the Two Rivers Gallery (Prince George, BC). Since 1996, Angelique Merasty Levac has lived and worked in Prince George, British Columbia.
