Andy Donato was born in Scarborough, Ontario in 1937. In 1961 he joined the Toronto Telegram newspaper, eventually becoming art director and part-time cartoonist. When the Telegram folded in 1971 he joined the new Toronto Sun and by 1974 was art director and drawing 5 cartoons per week. He continues to draw occasionally for the Sun on a freelance basis. Donato has won several prizes for his cartoons, including the National Newspaper Award for cartooning in 1976.
