Andrew Geddes was born in 1783 in Edinburgh, Scotland. He studied at the University of Edinburgh, and worked as a clerk in the city until his father's death, after which he moved to London to pursue a career in art, which his father had opposed. From 1806 Geddes was a frequent contributor to the Royal Academy exhibitions. Geddes died in 1844, in London.
