Alphonse Legros was born in 1837 in Dijon, France. He studied in Paris at the drawing school of Lecoq de Boisbaudran and at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. He exhibited widely in Paris, including at the Paris Salon, but moved to London in 1863 at the encouragement of his friend James Whistler. There he continued making etchings and taught, first at the South Kensington School of Art then at Slade School of Art at the University College London. Alphonse Legros died in 1911 in Watford, England.
