Along with Georg Baselitz, Anselm Kiefer, Sigmar Polke and Jörg Immendorf - whose powerful Café Deutschland paintings (19 in total, 1977 - 1983) revolve in part around his café conversations with Penck at this time - Penck revived figurative painting that was personally, politically and socially expressive of the harsh realities of the Cold War and struggles between capitalist and communist ideologies.
