Heffel Auction House Biography and Notes

Of German-Jewish descent, William Raphael moved from New York to Montreal in 1857. He had made his living from portrait commissions, and by the 1870s was doing genre painting of habitants going about their daily activities, most likely influenced by the Biedermeier painters of Germany, whose work he would have seen while studying at the Royal Academy of Berlin. This charming scene full of anecdotal detail captures the warm atmosphere of their rustic home.
