Leonard Richmond, a prominent British artist painting locally for the CPR acted as Gissing's art instructor. In 1929, Roland Gissing first showcased his paintings at an exhibition at the Calgary Public Library. In the early 1930s, Gissing began working in oils, often depicting scenes of the natural landscapes of Alberta.
