Waddington's Auction House Biography and Notes
1973, the year this work was painted, was also the year the idea of PNIAI (Professional Native Indian Artists Incorporated) was developed although the group would not be incorporated until 1974. Alex Janvier (b.1935) was pivotal in this initiative which would become known colloquially as "the Indian Group of Seven." Lee-Ann Martin notes that Janvier's work is "a combination of both indigenous and Western methods firmly rooted in the cultural soil of Canada and is not seen anywhere else in the world." Indeed, the visual language used by Janvier reflects his heritage with abstract designs drawn from beadwork, textiles and other indigenous sources, interpreted in liquid lines and primary colours.
