In the 1950s Meechan began working in clay, and in the 1960s, although non-indigenous, ventured into Indigenous design, used with permissions, as a tribute to original west coast art at a time with Indigenous west coast artists were not working in clay. Despite permissions, this practice is now viewed as cultural appropriation. Meechan was a member of the British Columbia Potters Guild, and was active in social justice movements around labour rights and women's issues. Ruth Meechan died in 2007.
