Robert M. Cavanaugh was born in 1927, in the area of the Black Hills of South Dakota. After serving in the Merchant Marine during the Second World War, he studied art in Phoenix, Arizona, and later at the Los Angeles Art Centre School. After a time in the United States Army, stationed in Germany, and a decade working advertising and design, Cavanaugh pursued art making full time, moving to Kalispell, Montana. His subjects include wildlife, farming and ranching scenes, and the Plains Indians of the American Northwest, always informed by the intense study and his deep familiarity with his subjects.
