Karen Zalamea’s interdisciplinary practice is rooted in photography and critically considers methodologies, materiality, and modes of presentation. She uses photography as a tool to think through themes of identity, memory, and uncertainty. They are lost as soon as they are made is a series of works that Zalamea began during an artist residency in Iceland. Zalamea photographs the Icelandic landscape using an analogue film camera and lenses made of ice. The work explores the camera and its optics as a site of experimentation, the perimeters of vision, and the possibilities of the landscape to reveal and deliver its own image.
