BYDealers Auction House Biography and Notes

Born in Barcelona in 1893, Joan Miró was one of the seminal figures in 20th Century painting, sculpture, ceramics and printmaking. Since the 1920s, Miró was an explorative and innovative printmaker who often worked with printers and publishers in the production of lithographs and intaglio. Miró also collaborated with poets to illustrate their works. After the Second World War, Miro began to concentrate on printmaking with his new dealer Aimé Maeght. Miro experimented endlessly with a broad array of printmaking techniques—his painting often influenced his printmaking and vice-versa—and La Creole (1958) is an excellent example of the artist's own graphic interchange.
