Georges Noël was born in Béziers, France in 1924. His education began with engineering before studying painting and sculpture from 1939 – 1945. He moved to Paris in 1956, where he was influenced by the art informal and Nouveau Réalisme movements, as well as the works of Dubuffet, Klee, Pollock, and Brassai. Informed by drawing and “automatic writing”, Noël began producing works on paper and canvas termed “Palimpsests.” Using powdered pigments, sand and glue Noël would quickly build up layers only then to scratch, lacerate and to erase the surfaces. For Noël, the term expressed layers of sensibility, emotion, energy and memories. The works created at the time of Noël’s New York period from 1969–1983, are more geometric in their composition of which New Palimpsests #5 is an example of.
